Between 1817 and 1820, German botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius traveled some 1,400 miles through Brazil and Peru, much of it across the Amazon basin. What he found became his Natural History of Palms, published in three volumes between 1823 and 1853: a catalogue of every known genus of palm that shaped how palms are classified today and included the first maps of where they grow.
The Book of Palms reproduces its 240 chromolithographic plates in a compact Taschen hardcover, introduced by H. Walter Lack, former director of the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum in Berlin-Dahlem.
