Life-size lemons, citrons, and oranges floating above Italian gardens, straight from an 18th-century masterpiece.
The Book of Citrus Fruits reproduces the hand-colored copper engravings of Johann Christoph Volkamer (1644 to 1720), a Nuremberg merchant devoted to the citrus trees that were prized as exotic luxuries in Northern Europe at the time. First published in 1708, his work pictures 170 varieties of citrons, lemons, and bitter oranges at life size, each fruit hovering above a view of an Italian villa or garden in compositions that feel equal parts botanical record and daydream.
This Taschen edition, introduced by Iris Lauterbach, draws on recently discovered hand-colored copies held in the municipal archive of Fürth, along with 56 newly found illustrations intended for a third volume that was never published. Bound in cloth in Taschen's XXL format across 384 pages, it gives every plate the scale it deserves, and the saturated yellows, oranges, and greens read like paintings on the page.
