Andy Warhol: Love, Sex, and Desire. Drawings 1950-1962 opens a chapter of Warhol's work that few people know. Throughout the 1950s, long before Pop art made him famous, Warhol made hundreds of ink drawings, many of young men, that reveal a gifted and tender draftsman. He hoped to publish them as a book in his lifetime, but it never happened. Taschen has now brought that idea to life, with more than 300 drawings selected and introduced by editor Michael Dayton Hermann.

Essays by Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik and critic Drew Zeiba place the drawings within Warhol's life and within queer art history, and poems by James Baldwin, Thom Gunn, Harold Norse, Essex Hemphill, and Allen Ginsberg run alongside the images. The result is a large, beautifully produced hardcover that shows the sensitivity and wit at the root of everything Warhol made later.
