We begin where we almost always do... with fragrance for the home.

This month, every member received our Sweet Pepper candle, one of the coconut wax candles we hand-pour in small batches right here in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Black pepper opens with a gentle heat while orange flower softens the spice, and tonka bean and vanilla settle into the heart. Cedar, vetiver, and patchouli ground it all in polished wood, capturing the essence of an antique library where the warmth of the shelves meets the soft rustle of turning pages.

Twelve ounces, poured in our proprietary coconut wax for a clean, toxin-free burn, with roughly 80 hours of fall evenings ahead of it.

That's why this month's mailer also includes the Botanicals Match Box from Saint Austin, a decorative box wrapped in a botanical chart of wildflowers and hedgerow blooms in soft, garden-fresh hues. Inside is a full box of matches with a striker strip on the side, long enough to reach the wick without singeing your fingertips.

A Candle Care Set to Keep Every Wick in Line

Beautiful candles are not difficult to care for, they just ask for a little attention.

Members will also find a candle care set in their box, crafted from stainless steel and finished in gold, with a snuffer and wick trimmer presented in a velvet bag with our signature chartreuse tassel. Two simple tools that make a real difference in how your candles burn and how long they last.

How to Keep a Candle Burning Evenly

Nearly every candle problem, from tunneling down the middle to soot on the glass to a wick that drowns in its own wax, comes down to three habits.

1. Trim the wick to a quarter inch before every burn. A long wick makes a tall, restless flame that throws soot onto the glass and burns through wax faster than it should. This is what the trimmer is for, and it takes three seconds.
2. Let the first burn go long enough. Wax has a memory. Burn a new candle until the melted pool reaches the edge of the vessel, usually two to three hours, and it will keep burning edge to edge for the rest of its life. Cut that first burn short and it will tunnel straight down the middle instead.
3. Snuff the flame instead of blowing it out. A snuffer starves the flame of oxygen without scattering hot wax or sending a plume of smoke through the room, and it leaves the wick standing upright and centered for next time.

One more: retire a candle once about half an inch of wax is left, so the vessel never overheats. Then wash the glass out and keep it for matches, cotton rounds, or a very small bouquet.
